The No Borders Community Quilt Story

In June 2025 I put out a call asking for contributions to a community quilt. The intention was to raise support and ultimately funds for families affected by ICE raids.

I was overwhelmed by the response and ultimately received over 90 block submissions from all over the world. I had initially intended to do the piecing and then complete the hand quilting process myself.

After much thought, I decided to reach back out to the community and instead of completing the quilt in isolation I organize seven quilting bees which were open to the public in and around the city of Philadelphia. Participants in the bees worked together to quilt, embellish and imbue this quilt with even more love and intention.

My initial intention was to complete the quilt and then run an online raffle to direct funds towards an organization supporting immigrant rights. As the community around the quilt grew the spirit of the quilt became even more rooted in the Philadelphia community I began to feel like the quilt should be displayed somewhere in Philadelphia during the raffle period. Once again, the community came through and one of the quilting bee participants was able to help me organize a display period for the quilt at Fleisher Art Memorial.

The display period for the No Borders Community Quilt will be February 26 - March 21st.

I will be announcing the details for the raffle fundraiser in the coming weeks. If you would like to keep up with this project, please sign up for the mailing list above.

All associated fundraising efforts will be directing donations to JUNTOS a “community-led, Latine immigrant organization in South Philadelphia fighting for our human rights as workers, parents, youth, and immigrants.”

The Original Call

Community Quilt - SUBMISSIONS CLOSED

No Borders. No Nation-States.

This is a call for contributions to a community quilt (or 2) I am organizing to raise funds for families affected by I C E raids and detention.

Migration is human.  Fixed borders and nations-states are a cruel legacy of European Imperialism and continue to be an unforgiving tool of contemporary colonialism.

People are going to move to survive and for a chance to thrive. When “my” country is a major reason people cannot thrive where they are rooted I have to take responsibility for that.  I support all people who seek safety, survival, (or what ever they are seeking!) through emigration. AND I support displaced peoples’ right to return.

Im still formulating my thoughts around this project but I feel compelled to get this going.

The Call:

3-10 flying geese blocks pieced together in a strip

SIZE: Any

COLOR: No strict limitation but try to incorporate black/grey.

SUGGESTION: Play with higher contrast and lower contrast combinations.

Please DM me for submission information.

Submission deadline: received by July 15.

Please share this call. PARTICIPANTS: use #noborderscommunityquilt when sharing any project documentation.
